Putnam County falls to Tipton to finish 2nd in State

Putnam County's dream season ends with a 2nd Place finish in Class 1.  After a close 1st half, Tipton pulled away in the 2nd Half to win 39-14.

Tipton advanced to the Putnam 25 on their first drive, but turned it over on downs.  Unfortunately for the Midgets, they fumbled on the next day.  But Putnam County's defense stepped up again, turning them over on downs.  The Putnam offense was unable to get a first down on the next possession, and a good return for Tipton set them up at the 33-yard line. Tipton capitalized when William Cashman scored from 7 yards to put the Cardinals on top 7-0.  Putnam answered when Riediger broke free to score on an 83-yard run.  After one quarter of play, the game was tied at 7.

Tipton's Tyler Rivera scored two touchdowns in the 2nd quarter to put the Cardinals up 19-7.  Putnam answered late in the half when Angstrom Watt ran it in from 2 yards.  Tipton had a 19-14 lead at the half.

Putnam's was able to advance into Tipton territory on the opening drive, but got stalled at the 26-yard line of Tipton.  The Midgets would have trouble with the Cardinals' defense the rest of the half.  Tipton would pull away when Cashman scored his 2nd and 3rd touchdowns of the game.  Paxton Pyle added a touchdown for Tipton to win the game 39-14.

While the loss was disappointing for Putnam County, they had a great season.  Coach Adam Huse said after the game, "I'm extremely proud of the way that we battled and fought through the entirety of the game.  We knew they were going to be a really tough team.  And we felt like we held our own for quite a while."

Treven Riediger finished the game with 101 yards rushing to lead the Midgets.  Putnam County finishes 13-1 and captures its second runner-up finish in school history.
