When the Brookfield Bulldogs and Marceline Tigers get together for the annual Bell Game, you can throw out the records. It is usually a hard-fought, close game. This year's version was no different. Not only was the bell on the line, the winner would capture 3rd place in the GRC.
The first quarter was scoreless. Both teams lost a fumble. Brookfield punted twice, and Marceline turned it over on downs. Marceline finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 2nd quarter with 9:03 left. Cody Rodgers found the end zone from 3 yards out. The PAT put the Tigers up 7-0. After trading punts, Brookfield was able to score when Phoenix Jordan connected with Alex Bennett on a 15-yard touchdown. Jordan ran in the conversion to make it 8-7. Marceline had one last-ditch effort, but ended the half at midfield.
The third quarter was much like the first. The first four possessions were punts, and then Marceline turned it over on downs. Brookfield maintained their slim 8-7 lead after three. In the fourth quarter, both teams stalled on their first drives, but Brookfield extended the lead with 3:18 left. It looked like Coldon Parrent's run was stopped, but before he was down, he found Jordan behind him. Jordan took it down the left side into the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown run. After the game, Jordan said that Parrent, "was about to go down, and we made eye contact, and we both knew what was going to happen. He tossed it to me, and I caught it and ran for the touchdown."
Jordan would add another touchdown with 1:18 left in the game. A Parrent conversion was the final score. Ryder Techau sealed the game with an interception to give Brookfield a 22-7 win.
Brookfield finishes the season 7-2 and 6-2 in the GRC. Marceline finishes the season 5-4 and 5-3 in the GRC. Both teams will have byes next week before starting postseason play.
I was unable to catch up with Brookfield coach Cory Luke after the game, but he did talk to NEMOPressbox.com. Here is the story from them, along with interviews by Luke, Jordan, and Marceline Coach Mark Ross.
