GRC/GRC West Week 1 Football Power Poll

by Jeremy Benson, GrandRiverConference.com

Week 1 of high school football is over. Each GRC and GRC West team has played a game, so it is time for the first Power Poll for each conference. I am using the coaches' poll as the starting point for the poll and will adjust it weekly based on the results.

GRC (11-Man)
With nine teams in the conference, every week will feature four conference games and one non-conference game.  All but Polo played a conference game this week.  Here are the results for Week 1.

#3 Brookfield 35 #1 Trenton 14
Brookfield won their inaugural GRC game over Trenton.  It was the 5th straight year that Brookfield and Trenton opened up against each other, but it is the first time they have been conference opponents.  Brookfield snapped a three-game losing streak against Trenton, avenging a 36-18 loss from last season.

#6 South Harrison 36 #2 Milan 29
South Harrison knocked off the defending conference champions and avenged a 40-0 loss from last season.  It is South Harrison's first win over Milan since 2020.  This series has been dominated by the home team.  Since Milan joined the GRC, the home team has been 9-1, with Milan's win in 2022 at South Harrison being the only win by the road team.

#3 Marceline 33 #7 Putnam County 7
Marceline won their first GRC game over Putnam County.  It was the first meeting between these two teams since 2015.  Since 2010 (as far back as MSHSAA goes), Marceline is 6-0 vs. Putnam County.

#9 Gallatin 30 #7 Maysville 27
In the most competitive game of the night, Gallatin held on to defeat Maysville.  This was Gallatin's eighth consecutive win over Maysville, but the three-point win is the closest game in the winning streak.  The game featured a matchup of two coaches in their first career games as head coach.  You can read more about this game here.

West Platte 35 #5 Polo 26
Polo opened against West Platte for the third consecutive season.  West Platte ended a two-game losing streak with the win over Polo.

Power Poll

GRC West (8-Man)
All 8 teams in the GRC West were on the road against Highway 275 teams in Week 1.  Each of the games was a rematch of last year's season openers.  Three of the eight GRC West teams were victorious.

Every game had the same outcome as last year except for the Rock Port-Pattonsburg game, in which Rock Port came out victorious in a 2-point game. Although Platte Valley defeated Worth County for the second straight year in the regular season, Worth County has ended its season the last two years in the playoffs. Stanberry had to come from behind in their victory, but the win was their ninth consecutive over Mound City.

Scores
Platte Valley 12 #1 Worth County 6
#2 Albany 66 Stewartsville-Osborn 6
#3 St. Joseph Christian 68 DeKalb 8
#4 Stanberry 36 Mound City 28
Nodaway Valley 42 #5 North Andrew 16
East Atchison 58 #6 King City 24
Rock Port 62 #7 Pattonsburg 60
South Holt 69 #8 Princeton 32

Bell Game Rivalry joins the GRC

by Jeremy Benson, GrandRiverConference.com It's a mere 12 miles that separate Brookfield High School and Marceline High School, as per Google Maps.  But what's truly remarkable is the 54-year hiatus since these two schools last clashed in a conference football game. Brookfield and Marceline were both in the North Central Missouri Conference (NCMC) in 1970.  In 1970, the NCMC decided to fold.  A new conference with the same name would be organized,  Brookfield remained in a revamped NCMC from 1971 to 1975 before going independent until 1986, when they joined the Tri-Rivers Conference.  They jumped to the Clarence Cannon Conference (CCC) in 2010. Marceline was in the Northern Missouri Conference from 1971 to 1974 before joining the Lewis & Clark Conference in 1975, where they would be members for almost 50 years. However, the history between these two teams goes back much further. They played against each other for the first time in 1909. Brookfield won the fi...

GRC Boys Basketball 2024-25 Season Preview

by Jeremy Benson, GrandRiverConference.com Sponsored by Maysville received six first-place votes and is the coaches' pick to repeat as GRC Boys Basketball Champions for the 2024-25 season. Defending champion Putnam County received two first-place votes and was picked second. Gallatin was picked third by the coaches. Maysville Maysville had one of its best seasons in school history last year. They finished 25-2 overall and 5-1 in the GRC. They also won the District Championship and the Gallatin and King City tournaments. This year, Todd Mercer takes over the reins. The Wolverines would like to build on the success from last season.
