Trenton and Maysville compete in the Maysville Round Robin Softball Tournament

by Jeremy Benson, GrandRiverConference.com

GRC members, Trenton and Maysville, both participated in the Maysville Round Robin Softball Tournament today.  They were joined by a pair of Tigers, DeKalb and Plattsburg.  Plattsburg won the tournament with Trenton finishing second.  Here are the results of the tournament:

Game 1
Plattsburg 6 Maysville 2
Trenton 14 DeKalb 1

Game 2
DeKalb 4 Maysville 0
Plattsburg 3 Trenton 0

Game 3
Trenton 17 Maysville 0
Plattsburg 5 DeKalb 1

I was able to attend one Trenton and one Maysville game (both against Plattsburg).  Here is a summary of each game.

Plattsburg 6 Maysville 2
Both teams were scoreless after the first.  Bella Redman reached on an error for Maysville, but was caught stealing.  In the second inning, Bentz led off the inning for Plattsburg and Arnold followed with a 2-run home run to go up 2-0.  Maysville went down 1-2-3 in the 2nd.

After a scoreless 3rd, Maysville was able to tie the game in the 4th.  After a Bella Redman single, Elena Clark reached on a fielder's choice.  Aleah Mason followed with a double with Clark heading to third.  Sophia Redman would follow with an RBI single scoring Clark.  Mason would then score on a throwing error by Arnold.  It looked like Maysville was threatening for more, but Sophia Redman was called out for Runner's interference.  Lillie Mygatt would then pop out to first to end the inning tied at 2.

Plattsburg would respond in the 5th.  After a lead-off out, Nelson doubled, followed by a Sophie Schmitten single.  With runners on first and third, Schmitten would steal second.  Lillie Schmitten would drive her in and then steal second.  An error and fielder's choice followed to score a couple more runs to make it 5-2.  The Tigers would add another run in the 6th after Allie Roberson reached on an error, stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Madison Huke.  Maysville got two runners on in the 6th, but were unable to score.  The game ended after 6 due to the time limit.

Plattsburg 3 Trenton 0
The game between Trenton and Plattsburg was a classic pitcher's dual.  Neither team was able to score in the first 3 innings.  Trenton only had one runner, a Mirena King single, in the first three frames.  Plattsburg was able to get on the board in the 4th.  Arnold walked with one out.  After a Huke single and another walk to load the bases, an error by King allowed the first run to score.

Trenton would get a Madi Moore single in the 4th, but she would be stranded.  Neither team got a hit in the 5th.  Plattsburg added 2 runs in the 6th.  A lead-off walk combined with a wild pitch and 3 errors and one hit lead to the 2 runs.  Trenton led off the 6th with a Kaegen Croy double, but Plattsburg retired the final three to win the game 3-0.

Trenton Stats (Unofficial)
Kaylor Hodge, 0-3, 2 K

Bell Game Rivalry joins the GRC

by Jeremy Benson, GrandRiverConference.com It's a mere 12 miles that separate Brookfield High School and Marceline High School, as per Google Maps.  But what's truly remarkable is the 54-year hiatus since these two schools last clashed in a conference football game. Brookfield and Marceline were both in the North Central Missouri Conference (NCMC) in 1970.  In 1970, the NCMC decided to fold.  A new conference with the same name would be organized,  Brookfield remained in a revamped NCMC from 1971 to 1975 before going independent until 1986, when they joined the Tri-Rivers Conference.  They jumped to the Clarence Cannon Conference (CCC) in 2010. Marceline was in the Northern Missouri Conference from 1971 to 1974 before joining the Lewis & Clark Conference in 1975, where they would be members for almost 50 years. However, the history between these two teams goes back much further. They played against each other for the first time in 1909. Brookfield won the fi...
