GRC East Girls Championship - Milan at Trenton

Milan Lady Cats go on the road to play the Trenton Lady Bulldogs tonight at 6:00.  The winner of tonight's game will win the GRC East and play in the GRC Championship game against St. Joseph Christian on Saturday, February 12 at 6:00 pm at Milan.

Milan comes into the game with a record of 18-5 and 6-0 in conference.  They are seeking their 3rd consecutive GRC East championship.  They are led in scoring by Cady Pauley who averages 33.7 points per game.  Pauley has 2,892 points leaving her 108 points shy of 3,000 for her high school career.

Trenton is 14-8 overall with a mark of 5-1 in conference.  They won the GRC East (and the title game) three consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2019.  Trenton is trying to win the division title after being picked to finish 7th in the media poll.  After starting the season 2-6, they have rebounded to win 12 of their last 14.  Mirena King leads Trenton with 12.2 points per game.

It will be a contrast of styles tonight.  A high scoring Milan team that averages 55.8 points a game will face a tough Trenton defense that only gives up 36.6.

After a bucket on the initial possession, Milan has several empty possession before a bucket by Cole.  She is fouled and hits the free throw.   Milan up 6-4 with 3:30 left.

Morgan King with a 3 from the corner to put Trenton up 9-6.  2:00 left.

Trenton throws the ball away with 7 seconds left.  Cady Pauley with about a 35 foot shot at the buzzer.  We are tied at 9 after 1.

Second Quarter
No scoring in the first 1:30 of the 2nd quarter.  Chandler Lynch is face guarding Cady Pauley and not giving her much room.

Pauley gets open for a couple of 3's, but they don't fall.  Next possession, Milan with a steal.  Cady Pauley with a layup to make it 11-9 with 4:45 left.

Mirena King with a steal on the inbound to tie it at 11 with 3:40 left.

Dickson with a jumper to put Milan up 13-11.  1:35 left in half.

A corner jumper right before the horn by Janissa Martinez gives Milan a 15-11 halftime lead.  The pace is definitely in favor of Trenton, but both teams finding a hard time generating offense.

Pauley has 8 to lead Milan.  Mirena King with 8 to lead Trenton.

Third Quarter
Third Quarter is underway.  Both teams with a possession in the first minute without scoring.

Trenton very patient on offense, but unable to get the shot to fall.  Milan comes back with a bucket in the lane from Avery Pickering.  Mirena King answers with a 3.  17-14 Milan with 5:39 left.

Pickering back on the other end with another bucket down low.  Cady Pauley called for a charge.  Her second.  Milan up 19-14 with 4:40 left.

Lynch with a 3 from top of the key to tie it at 19 with 2:00 left.

Trenton content with running out the clock, but misses a shot. Milan fans calling for a shot clock in high school basketball.

At the end of 3, we are tied at 19.

Mirena King has 11 to lead Trenton.  Cady Pauley with 8 to lead Milan.

Fourth Quarter
Avery Pickering with a bucket for Milan in the lane.  She has all 6 of Milan's points this half.  They lead 21-19 with 7:10 left.

Chandler Lynch is fouled and hits 2 free throws. It is tied at 21 with 6:33 left.

Morgan King with a 3 to put Trenton up 24-21 with 5:37 left.

Cady Pauley with a putback with 4:35 left. Trenton up 24-23

Pauley with a 3 from the corner with 4:00 left.  Milan leads 26-24.

Madi Moore with a layup to tie it at 26 with 3:10 left.

Cady Pauley answers with a bucket and is fouled with 2:55 left.  Free throw is good. 29-26 Milan.

Emerson Pauley is fouled for Milan and shoots 1-1 with 1:50 left.  She hits 1 of 2. Milan is up 30-26.

Mirena King drives for a layup with 1:17 left.  The bucket cuts it to 30-28 Milan.

Emerson Pauley misses front end of 1-1.  Mirena King hits 3 on other end for Trenton.  Trenton leads 31-30 with 38.3 left.

Morgan King misses a 3 at the buzzer.  Milan holds on for a 32-31 win over Trenton.

Milan will play St. Joseph Christian for the GRC Conference Championship game on Saturday at 6pm.

Bell Game Rivalry joins the GRC

by Jeremy Benson, GrandRiverConference.com It's a mere 12 miles that separate Brookfield High School and Marceline High School, as per Google Maps.  But what's truly remarkable is the 54-year hiatus since these two schools last clashed in a conference football game. Brookfield and Marceline were both in the North Central Missouri Conference (NCMC) in 1970.  In 1970, the NCMC decided to fold.  A new conference with the same name would be organized,  Brookfield remained in a revamped NCMC from 1971 to 1975 before going independent until 1986, when they joined the Tri-Rivers Conference.  They jumped to the Clarence Cannon Conference (CCC) in 2010. Marceline was in the Northern Missouri Conference from 1971 to 1974 before joining the Lewis & Clark Conference in 1975, where they would be members for almost 50 years.
